LOW SPERM COUNT
Even if you are fit and healthy, there are many things that can cause low sperm count:
Fever can have a big impact on semen quality. If you have had a fever it can affect your sperm quality for up to three months, as this is how long it takes for sperm cells to form and mature.
Sperm cells are sensitive to heat and cannot survive very long at high temperatures. We recommend you avoid the following:
– Long stays in a sauna
– Long, hot baths
– Use of tanning booths and excessive sunbathing
– Tight trousers and underwear
Although it is possible for men to have children at an older age, sperm count, volume and motility reduce with age.
Too much caffeine and alcohol may lead to reduced sperm quality.
Anabolic steroids and other use of hormones can lead to reduced sperm quality. However, the body also experiences natural hormonal changes, which may cause natural fluctuations in sperm quality.
Tobacco smoking – both cigarettes and stronger tobaccos – can reduce sperm quality.
Besides the above, your sperm quality may be affected by for example obesity, drug abuse, lack of exercise, excessive exercise, stress and lack of sleep.
