DO YOU KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT SPERM QUALITY?

We deal with sperm all day, every day. Sperm is not just a point of interest; it is our foundation, and we constantly work to improve quality, sperm count and the sperm cells’ survival rate.

New studies conclude that a lot of men generally don’t know enough about infertility and sperm.

D. Daulmer, P. Chan, K.C. Lo, J. Takefman and P. Zelkowitz completed a study on 700 men which, according to Medical Daily, showed that the participants have limited knowledge about the different factors that are connected to male infertility.

It seems like fertility is something that men don’t think about until they are told that they have a low sperm count. This usually happens when the men decide to start a family and experience problems getting their partner pregnant.

At European Sperm Bank we often receive e-mails and calls from men, asking how they can improve their sperm count. Firstly, some men are simply born with a very high sperm quality with a high sperm count.

Most men have a ‘normal’ sperm count which is measured in four different parameters: total volume, motility, morphology and sperm count.

GOOD ADVICE

With a few simple actions, men can seek to improve their sperm quality. It is important to remember that these bits of advice are general and that they should be combined with a healthy lifestyle:

  • Exercise
  • Don’t smoke
  • Eat healthily
  • Get at least eight hours of sleep every night
  • Drink less alcohol
  • Avoid drugs and anabolic steroids
  • Have protected sex
  • Get tested regularly for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
